Our History

Miller Beer was first brewed by Frederick J. Miller, a renowned German brewer. After travelling to the U.S. and settling in Wisconsin in 1855, he bought the Plank Road Brewery for $2,300.

Using a unique brewer’s yeast hand-carried from Germany, and locally grown hops and barley, he began to produce his own finest quality beer in 1883.

After his death in 1888, his family kept the brewery going. It made it through Prohibition, and sales topped 1 million barrels for the first time in 1949.

In 1955 Miller Brewing Co. celebrated its 100th year of operation!

Employing a unique cold filtering process that doesn’t need heat pasteurisation, Miller Genuine Draft was launched in the U.S. in 1986. It is this process that gives Miller Genuine Draft the smooth refreshing taste of draft beer in a bottle.

In 2002, Miller Brewing Co. became part of SABMiller, one of the world’s largest brewers, with a presence in over 40 countries, across four continents. Miller Genuine Draft is sold in 80 markets worldwide.

In 2005 SABMiller celebrates the 150th year of brewing Miller beer!

We’ve enjoyed the journey to get where we are today. Here’s to the next 150 years.
